Hawthorn in a Dartmoor landscape

For Sale>>  Oil Painting by David W Young Framed size1530 x 540mm

On sale at Mayflower Arts, Plymouth

This painting encapsulates so many of the emotions that run through me with my relationship with that granite and peat upland called Dartmoor. There is the big sky that so often produces a remarkable sunset after a long wet and dismal day. Then there are the long grasses and gorse interspersed with granite clitter with their age old sheep tracks that guide me through this landscape. Finally there is the hawthorn whose small and twisted size belies a great age lived in harsh conditions.

I painted the sun setting in the heart of this great gnarled, thorny tree almost as an act of reverence.

May Blossom

A Dartmoor Spring

For Sale>> Oil Painting by David W Young

Size  40 X 15.5 inches

On sale at Mayflower Arts, Plymouth

On the western flanks of Dartmoor adjoining the Tavy valley you will find the old hill farms with their granite walled fields creeping up the valley sides till they come up against the harsher conditions of the open moor.

One such farm is Stannon and it is here that I have painted this old and magnificent Hawthorn that stands in one of these fields. In addition to the beauty of the May blossom that coats this tree, the fields in this area are swathed in Bluebells and Celandine which contrast with the rich greens which have burst forth after the harsh winter that this part of the West Country endures.

Staple Tors landscape, Dartmoor

Sold  Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40" X 20"

Looking down from the heights of Great Staple Tor the artist has painted the sweeping landscape of  Middle Staple Tor and Pew Tor, down through the valleys of south Devon and finally to the sea at Plymouth Sound.

This great panorama has been captured in the diminishing warm light of a clear winters day.

Sunflower

For Sale  Oil Painting by David W  Young

Size 26’’x 26’’

BANG! I’ve suddenly gone mad with wild colours and a larger than life sunflower.

Each year I make space in my raised beds for a few sunflowers that add colour and produce some valuable seed.

Things like nasturtiums, marigolds and sunflowers are great because they get eaten along with the more conventional vegetables.

I have painted flowers and fungi larger than life before. It brings a new perspective to these small everyday things.

Imagine an insect looking at a sunflower. For us it would be like looking at a mighty redwood with a huge flower the size of a windmill at the top.

Reflections in a Dartmoor Pool

For Sale  Oil Painting by David W  Young

Size 39’’x 23.5’’

Between Staple and Cox Tors on the western side of Dartmoor there is a large pool that is a magnet for the the livestock of the moor. Here I have depicted a Dartmoor ponie that is reflected in the pond. Behind is Pew Tor with Plymouth Sound in the far distance.

Garjiya Devi Temple , Himalayan Foothills, India

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 72’’ X 30’’

I first became acquainted with this temple when riding through the foothills to Nainital, a former British hill station in northern India. The temple which is perched on the huge rock which stands defiantly on the flood plain of the river Kosi, is visited by thousands of devotees to the Goddess Naina Devi. A large fair is held on the plain during Poorinima.I have made several visits to this stunning location which is on the edge of Corbett National Park and came to the conclusion a large painting was needed to recreate the physical sensation of being there. On the left of the picture pilgrims are crossing the hurdle and stone bridge while to the right local women are returning from the forest with faggots and fodder. The mellow, hazy, evening light was central to this picture, accentuating the magnificence of this holy edifice.

Burrator Panorama, Dartmoor

Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40" X 20"

For viewing & sale at Mayflower Arts, The Barbican, Plymouth

In this oil painting I depict Burrator Reservoir and Sheeps Tor with Snapper Tor to the foreground. (Snapper Tor isn't named on most maps though with it's prominence in the landscape it fully deserves a mention).

I am really pleased with this work as I feel it conveys the grandeur of the landscape which is found on this part of the moor. I have put particular effort into the effects of the sky with its rays of light cutting through the clouds to water below.

The River

Tamar Valley

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

This part of the Tamar  is only a short walk down the hill from where I live. To say that it was an influence on my early career would be an understatement. It is a landscape that is almost impossibly beautiful. It teems with flora & fauna.

I have painted it on one of those late summer afternoons when there is that beguiling stillness in the air and the river shimmers with reflections.  Beyond, the stately Crack Willow with its silvery green foliage, towers over the landscape.

A footnote to this painting. Until a year or two ago there was permitted access to this glorious landscape. The new pheasant shooting wealthy landlord has now banned us all.

The Winter of my Mind

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

In the the deepest depths of Winter, snow lies over the contorted alder and willow trees that emerge from the icy waters. Reflections of these cold, twisted branches in this blue, grey landscape only adds to the confusion in ones mind.

Acer Palmatum painting by David W Young Full Moon Rising, Hound Tor, Dartmoor painting by David W Young

Grimspound, Dartmoor

Sold  Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40’’ X 20’’

Grimspound is a bronze age village on the eastern side of Dartmoor. Surrounded by a granite wall called a ‘pound’ to safely contain livestock, it was believed to number at least twenty four thatched granite round houses. The one depicted in the foreground by the artist is a particularly good

example - its entrance on the left can be clearly seen.

The Oak

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

My homage to the tree that makes me see purpose to the great cycle of life, decay and regeneration.

This magnificent Oak tree in the Walkham valley include all of the above cycles.

This painting is framed with the twisted dead oak branches of the forest floor. A  painting truly born of the soil.

Skinny Dipping

The River Dart, Dartmoor size 40’’ X 24’’

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

I came round the bend and saw a group of people sitting in the sun by the river. The contrast between these naked apes and the green, verdant landscape was striking if not shocking.

Their relaxed manner took me back to my teenage years when failing exams didn’t seem the end of the world. A time when the summers really where hot and long  and being rural kids made our own entertainment in a succession of parties in village halls to the great outdoors.

This painting brings together many of the aspects of my teenage years. My environment, my friends, the girls and FUN!

Acer Palmatum

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40’’ X 20’’

On the former Duke of Bedford estate at Endsleigh in the Tamar valley is a wonderful  example of the ‘natural’ style gardens fashionable among the landed gentry in the early 19th Century. Full of follies and water features, the exotic plants and trees that were brought from all over the world have now matured into magnificent specimens, including this huge Acer Palmatum. In Autumn its falling red leaves shroud the surrounding moss and fern covered paths, while standing under it gives the sensation of being under a huge red Chinese lantern.

Full Moon Rising

Hound Tor, Dartmoor

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.   Size 42’’ X 16’’

I observed the ghostly sight of the full moon rising up between the two huge main pillars of  Hound Tor after working late on another painting a couple of miles away.

This was in complete contrast to the picture I was engaged with and would use an exciting new range of colours  from my palette.

I have conveyed that time of evening when there is just a tiny bit of daylight, as represented by a hint of pink in the sky, before the moon takes over as the main source of light.

The River Taw below Belstone

Sold  Oil painting by David William Young.

  Size 420’ X 20’’

The title to this painting is  little misleading as the river only takes a small part in the picture and Belstone is up the hill out of sight.

The real focus of this painting are the wonderfully distorted shapes of the trees and the luxuriant coat of mosses that shroud the granite boulders in this damp atmosphere.

The River Meavy, Norsworthy, Burrator, Dartmoor
Sold Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40" X 30"

Tumbling down from the higher Moor, the peaty waters of the River Meavy flow through granite strewn woodland before entering the Reservoir at Burrator.

In this painting I have captured the mosses and lichens that cover both the granite boulders and deciduous trees due to the heavy rainfall and moist atmosphere of this valley on Dartmoor.

The Moorland Oak, Dartmoor

For sale Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 40" X 20"

On the flanks of the Dart valley the upland fields drop down to the valley floor. Ancient stone walls of granite divide the fields with the occasional tree, such as this old oak, growing up beside the granite.

I have painted this oak almost as I would paint the granite - in tone and texture they are so similar - reflecting the harsh environment.

In the distance can be seen Yar Tor.

Granite outcrop above Sandy Hole Pass on the East Dart river, Dartmoor

Sold Oil painting 40 X 20 inches

A long title, but this imposing outcrop of granite does not have the title of a Tor as it is found only a few feet above the flank of the East Dart River in the heart of the north Moor just above Sandy Hole Pass.

The wildness of this spot hides an industrial past. Tin was mined here in Tudor times causing great upheaval to the landscape and river. Evidence remains all around.

I have tried to capture the brooding change of weather with rain clouds gathering over Flat Tor & Cut Hill in the distance, while a solitary sheep gives scale to the massive granite boulders in the foreground.

The East Okement River near Okehampton

For Sale Oil painting Size 36 X 24 inches

From it’s head below Okement Hill in the heart of the north Moor, the East Okement river descends under the towering granite of East Mill Tor, Oke Tor and Belstone Tor till it reaches the steeply descending Halstock Wood whence it tumbles over a succession of waterfalls, rapids and rock pools. The wood is a delight of native deciduous woodland so typical of valleys that are in the shadow of the moor. In this painting I have gone to great lengths to get the reflection, refraction and distortion of the shallows in the river as well as putting my heart and soul into the Autumn trees that I love so much.

Sambar

Not for Sale 40’’X 36’’

I must admit, I have have had a few generous offers for this painting and even now I know of one person hoping I fall under the proverbial bus so he can remove it from the wall but for the time being I hold onto it.

You see, it still sends a little tingle down my spine and it draws me in in each time I look at it - that Sambar deer sitting atop the edge of the dried up nullah in the foothills of the Himalayas.

A Devon Rainforest,

The Dart Valley in a Summer haze

For Sale  Oil painting by David William Young.

Size 30" X 24"

‘I rode my horse up to the ridge. I stopped suddenly. The view that unfolded before my eyes was breathtaking. Surely this Dartmoor valley  couldn’t be in England. It was too epic, far too wild. It gave me a glimpse of the great deciduous forest that once swathed these islands.

This painting has no sky, no river. I want you to get lost in it. I have painted  sunshine breaking through the moist afternoon haze casting light on the forest of this deep meandering gorge. Unseen, the haze on this skin of leaves hides a hidden world of mosses, ferns & lichens that sheath these contorted ancient trees and granite clitter.’
